Akita International University (AIU), located in Akita, Japan, is seeking a qualified applicant to work as a key member of the writing team in the English for Academic Purposes (EAP) program. The successful candidate will be appointed at the assistant professor, associate professor, or full professor level. This is a tenure-track position with an expected start date of April 1, 2026.

English courses play a fundamental role in students' education at AIU from their freshman year until graduation. All incoming freshmen (except for a few native or near-native students who have received a significant portion of their prior education in English) take preparatory academic courses in speaking and listening, reading, and writing. They remain in the intensive English for Academic Purposes (EAP) program until they have achieved sufficient proficiency in the core skills to progress to various liberal arts courses in the Global Business, Global Studies, or Global Connectivity programs. Even after completing the EAP program, students must continue to take foundation courses such as Academic Reading Across Disciplines, Composition I (Academic Writing), and Composition II (Advanced Research Writing). Additional undergraduate English courses available at AIU include Speech Communication, Creative Writing, Introduction to English Studies, English Literature, Sociolinguistics,Linguistics, and Applied Linguistics.

AIU seeks vibrant candidates with a passion for teaching and a proven record of achievement both in the classroom and inresearch domains. We welcome applications from candidates with a PhD in a relevant field, such as Second LanguageAcquisition (SLA), English as a Medium of Instruction, TESOL, Linguistics, Applied Linguistics, etc.

Responsibilities:

  • Teach undergraduate writing courses in the EAP program and contribute to other higher-level English research writing courses in Basic Education.
  • Provide academic advising to individual students.
  • Engage in scholarly activity at an international level.
  • Participate in service to the university, program and community.
  • Collaborate with colleagues on program development.
  • Work effectively and pragmatically in a multicultural learning environment.
  • The possibility of teaching courses in the Teacher License Program (& others) at AIU.
