Salary commensurate with experience.

11 days paid vacation in the first fiscal year (July-June) increasing to 20 days after 6 years of employment, plus 5 paid “personal and sick days” each year. In addition, approximately two weeks company-wide break over Christmas/New Year, Japanese social insurance and pension, commuting allowance, and tuition benefits for Temple University, Japan Campus (TUJ) programs.

Overview of position

Reporting to TUJ’s Provost, the Associate Provost for Faculty Affairs (APFA) at the Japan Campus of Temple University is a new leadership position that will play a critical role in fostering TUJ’s uniquely diverse and vibrant faculty community. The Associate Provost is tasked with overseeing the full faculty life cycle, from hiring to onboarding to promotion to retirement, collaborating with both Academic Chairs/Directors and Human Resources to foster faculty talent. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to design, evaluate, and streamline initiatives and processes that support well-being and achievement at all stages of a faculty member’s career.

Key Responsibilities

  • Early Career Development: The rapid growth of TUJ’s faculty body provides the APFA with a unique opportunity to shape formative experiences for new faculty at TUJ. The APFA will enhance existing hiring and onboarding processes to help new faculty build a strong foundation and trajectory for a successful career at TUJ.
  • Renewal and Promotion Review: The APFA will provide information, clarity, and guidance as a neutral party for both candidates and reviewers during the contract review and rank promotion process. At TUJ, adjunct faculty are also ranked and eligible for promotion.
  • Visiting Faculty: The APFA will play an integral role in Temple University’s Provost’s Visiting Faculty Program, which provides Temple Main Campus faculty members with a unique opportunity to live, teach, and research at TUJ for semester or a year. Launched in 2023, this highly competitive program has already hosted over two dozen Main Campus visiting faculty members at TUJ. A faculty exchange program with Temple’s Rome Campus is also in development.
  • Faculty Personnel Records: The APFA will work closely with Academic Chairs/Directors and the Academic HR Specialist to ensure the accurate maintenance of faculty personnel records, e.g. teaching loads, annual review, promotion and review clocks and outcomes, offer letters and contracts. The APFA will serve as the Provost’s designee for the review and approval of faculty contracts, stipends, and payments.
  • Faculty Professional Development: The APFA will serve as a thought-partner and collaborator for the Provost, Academic Chairs/Directors, the Director of Teaching Practices, and the Director of Research in identifying and exploring professional development initiatives for faculty.
  • Strategic Planning and Cross-Campus Integration: The APFA will support long-term faculty planning in collaboration with the President and Provost, including forecasting faculty needs based on enrollment growth, new programs, and accreditation requirements. This may also include developing dashboards or annual reports on faculty trends, retention, promotion outcomes, and instructional capacity. The APFA will also serve as a key academic liaison across TUJ’s current and future campuses.
  • Quality Assurance: Support the Provost in preparing documentation for accreditation and other quality assurance reviews and helping lead special initiatives related to faculty affairs and new program launches.
  • Teaching: it is anticipated that the APFA will also hold a faculty title and teach two or three courses per year in their area of expertise.

Minimum Qualifications & Experience

  • PhD or other terminal degree
  • Five years of full-time faculty employment or Associate Professor rank
  • Experience in faculty development or in an academic leadership role that entails hiring, mentoring, and reviewing faculty.
  • Strong leadership, communication, and management skills in a fast-paced, multicultural environment. Desire and ability to collaborate across the institution, including with administration, faculty, and staff.
  • Ability to organize, prioritize, and follow multiple projects through to completion with high attention to detail and timelines.
  • Experience working with employment contracts, legally binding agreements, and sensitive HR information.
