Reliance Jio Plan launched
Mukesh Ambani, chairman of Reliance Industries, launched the Jio 4G services at the Annual General Meeting of the company in Mumbai. The launch of the service has generated a lot of user interest across the country. Thousands of people have already purchased the free Jio sim in the trial period.
India’s homegrown messaging app HIKE gets New round of funding
Hike, the Indian startup battling the might of WhatsApp and Facebook Messenger, today announced US$175 million in series D funding, according to CEO Kavin Mittal talking to Bloomberg.
The messaging app’s newest funding is from China’s Tencent – maker of WeChat – and Foxconn, with previous investors Tiger Global, SoftBank, and Bharti Enterprises also contributing.
China Begins Construction of Tibet’s Biggest Dam
China has started construction of its biggest hydropower project in Tibet costing over $3 billion which will supply electricity to the economically well-off regions in the country’s eastern region. The Suwalong hydropower project at the junction of Mangkam county in Tibet and Batang county in Sichuan province has a design capacity of 1.2 gigawatts and will be able to generate about 5,400 gigawatt hours of electricity a year when completed in 2021. The design capacity is more than double of Zangmu hydropower plant on Brahmaputra river which is Tibet’s largest existing hydro project. It was completed in October last year. It is hoped that the 18 billion yuan ($3 billion) Suwalong dam, could pave the way for other projects in the headwaters of the adjacent Nu (Salween) and Lancang (Mekong) rivers to fuel development of hydro power in Tibet.

SmartNews gets $38M Funding, now valued $500M-$600M
As large platforms like Facebook and Apple position themselves as the new go-to places to read news, an independent app that started in Japan has landed a new round of funding to raise its own game.
SmartNews — a news aggregation app that works with some 1,500 publications and selects stories for you based on your reading activity in the app — has raised another $38 million in a Series D round of funding.The startup is now approaching 20 million downloads and will be using the funding to continue growing that user base, as well as its overall revenues, especially outside of its home market. It will also use the investment for hiring and expanding its machine learning-based news-combing technology.
Kumar Mangalam Birla-led Aditya Birla Fashion and Retail (ABFRL) has acquired the Indian business of global clothing brand ‘Forever 21’ from Diana Retail Pvt. Ltd., the U.S.-based company’s local franchise partner, for over Rs.175 crore or $26 million.
